Newton’s 3rd Law Review: Good Concept, Ordinary Execution

Story

Set in 1999 in Hyderabad, the movie centers on police officer Vasu Dev (Sumanth) as he investigates the death of a youngster named Vinay (Trinadh Varma). He quickly realizes that it was not an accident, but rather a murder. As Vasu digs deeper, he finds a link between the victim and Stephen Mercury (Jagapathi Babu), a criminal and smuggler. The remainder of the story explores how Mercury is tied to Vinay’s life and to the events that led to Vinay’s death.

Performances

Sumanth delivers a measured performance and successfully brings depth to a few scenes. Shelly Kishore and Ravi Varma make their presence felt, while Neha Pathan, Jagapathi Babu and Avasarala Srinivas get limited scope despite having prominence in the story. Trinadh Varma, who plays a crucial role, delivers an effective performance.

Analysis

The film Newton’s 3rd Law, directed by Rajesh Karna, is built around the philosophy that every action has an equal and opposite reaction: a concept akin to Karma, where one reaps what they sow.

The core concept of the film is definitely interesting, and the way the initial setup is done with several characters’ introductions is also good. The screenplay is decent, but it lacks the overall grip that is needed for this kind of crime thriller.

The first half has a good impact in the initial moments, but after a few impressive scenes, as the investigation behind Vinay’s death moves forward, the scenes appear repetitive and stretched. The episode involving the gun and Vinay’s father could have been handled better.

The second half also follows the same route with some good scenes and a few ordinary scenes. The backstory of Vinay and his friend Karthik should have been more effective, which could have set the emotional tone rightly. Towards the climax, the film finds some momentum and ends on a better note with a good final twist.
